The Summer Day Camp Worker will provide leadership and interactive support in the daily activities of our summer day camp program ensuring that children are constantly and consistently supervised, supported and included in games and other activities.

The incumbent will work within a team to ensure that children are safe and cared for in accordance with The Salvation Army mission, values, and standards.

This is a fixed-term, full-time position:

  • 37.5 hours per week
  • 8:30 am to 4:30 pm
  • June 24 - August 23, 2024

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist with the implementation of a weekly summer day camp program targeted at children ages 6 - 11.
  • Provide interactive, hands-on support for activities, games and crafts.
  • Provide constant and consistent supervision of children.
  • Assist with leadership training opportunities for youth volunteers.
  • Plan and execute games, crafts and activities for campers.
  • Support meal and snack preparation, serving and clean up.
  • Provide constant supervision and care during community outings.
  • Provide daily set up and clean up.
  • Maintain safety practices in compliance with health and safety standards.
  • Prepare, submit, and act on incident reports when required.
  • Provide calming intervention as required ensuring the safety of everyone.
  • Responsible to work in compliance with Occupational Health & Safety Regulations.
  • Assist in the orientation of new volunteers regarding health and safety procedures.
  • Responsible to report any serious health and safety infractions or problems in accordance with policies to the Community and Family Services Team Lead.
  • Ensure camp spaces are cleaned regularly according to acceptable health standards.
  • Report any safety hazards, maintenance problems, equipment, or supply needs to the Community and Family Services Team Lead.
  • Maintain accurate records of camper information and attendance while maintaining confidentiality.
  • Maintain accurate written records, logs and statistical information.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

Education/Certifications:

  • Completion of some High School
  • Current First Aid/CPR
  • Must provide an original copy of a Background Check with vulnerable sector screening that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion, is required. The screening is secured either through the national Canadian Police Information Centre (CPIC) or through a local police detachment
  • Alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered.

Experience:

  • Related working experience is an asset.
  • Knowledge and experience working with youth with complex needs and behaviors is an asset.

  • Lead by example, by demonstrating a positive attitude, a strong work ethic and a willingness to learn and be flexible in the face of change.
  • Establish and maintain positive working relationships with others, both internally and externally, to achieve the goals of the organization.
  • Assess problem situations to identify causes, gather and process relevant information, generate possible solutions, and make recommendations and/or resolve the problem.
  • Develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.
