Description

The Salvation Army Windsor Centre of Hope operates 24/7 and has programs: Emergency Shelter, Residential Services Home, Food Bank, Outreach, and Spiritual Care.

The successful applicants for this summer student job will be signed to support the programs that needed and supervised by each Program Manager.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • With the supervision of the programs manager and on duty employees, assisting manager staff to develop program activities and facilitate activities.
  • Maintain accurate written records, logs of activities, including activity reports and statistical information.
  • Help clients develop problem solving and coping skills.
  • Assist manager to organize volunteers and events.
  • Clean and sanitize duties, working with residents and teaching them cleaning skills.
  • Assist food preparation.
  • Communicate with manager and staff regarding progress, problem solving and monitoring.
  • Ensure proper communication among SA staff members.
  • To serve clients in a manner befitting Christian standards, attitudes, principles, and goals, with care and concern for the spirit, body and mind of the individual.
  • Ensure that fire safety and public health standard care is maintained.
  • As required and as applicable, make suggestions that will improve efficiency, working conditions or procedures to the Manager.
  • Perform other duties as required.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • This position is a temporary full-time position based on 35 hours per week for 8 weeks.
  • The shifts will be 7.5 hours per day which includes a ½ hour unpaid meal break.
  • Flexibility in scheduling is required.
  • Working environment is typically in the activity room, chapel, dining area, lobby and other areas in generally agreeable conditions.
  • The performance of the job requires the ability to lift/move 20 lbs., reach, bend, twist, stoop, and computer keyboarding.

Normal location of work is: 355 Church Street, Windsor Ontario.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • This position is funded in part through the Canada Summer Jobs Program and the following represents the applicant criteria:
    • Is between 15 and 30 years of age (inclusive) at the start of the employment.
    • Is a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person on whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act*: and,
    • Is legally entitled to work according to the relevant provincial / territorial legislation and regulations.
    • *International students are not eligible. Recent immigrants are eligible if they are a Canadian Citizen or a permanent resident.

SKILLS AND CAPABILITIES:

  • Be available for minimum full 8 weeks of program.
  • Computer skills in all aspects of Microsoft Office.
  • Good oral, written and electronic communication skills.
  • Good interpersonal skills, self-motivated and disciplined.
  • Attention to detail, problem solving and analytical skills.
  • Strong sense of integrity and confidentiality with professional ethics and a balanced sense of fairness and flexibility.
  • Good organizational skills, ability to follow detailed instruction.
  • Ability to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion (i.e., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry) and provide an original copy of a Background Check with vulnerable sector screening.
  • Ability and willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.
