Description

The Day Camp Assistant Coordinator will assist the Day Camp Coordinator in all areas of operating the day camp program. They will provide a safe, caring, positive environment for all who attend the day camps while the children are participating in a variety of activities, making new friends, and learning about the Christian faith. The Salvation Army Oshawa Temple, Day Camp, seeks to provide excellent children's programming.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Program

  • Assist with the operation of the day camp and lead various camp activities including (but not limited to) music, sports, recreational games, crafts, and other scheduled events.
  • Supervise, interact with, and support all Day Camp campers.
  • Work cooperatively with the Day Camp Coordinator, Day Camp Counsellors, and Behavioral Support Worker to help coordinate and implement all programming for the Oshawa Temple Salvation Army Summer Day Camp Program.
  • Develop relationships with children, using empathy and active listening to encourage happy and well-developed children and youth.
  • Role models appropriate behaviors and attitudes.

General Accountabilities

  • Ensure that Day Camp area is tidy in relation to appearance, condition, and safety as recommended by Public Health etc.
  • Perform other relevant duties as assigned, i.e., set-up, and camp cleanup.
  • Ensure the highest standard of health and safety for all campers, volunteers, and staff.
  • Assist with ensuring the emotional wellness and personal development of campers.
  • Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army's health and safety policies and procedures.
  • Participate in the Summer Day Camp mentoring program for Day Camp staff and campers.
  • Support campers to develop socially, mentally, and spiritually.
  • Know and act in accordance with policies and procedures of The Salvation Army to ensure the safety and confidentiality of participants and information.
  • Act in cases of urgency or emergency in alignment with camp policies and procedures.

Written and Verbal Communication

  • Clearly communicate directions for program activities
  • Document process, and reports as needed and recommendations to resolve issues and problems.

Reporting

  • Create and maintain list of reports required for health and safety compliance purposes.
  • Support external reporting requests as needed.

Perform other related duties as required.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • This is a temporary full-time position based on 37.5 hours per week.
  • Working environment is in a day camp setting both indoor and outdoor in generally agreeable conditions with the following exceptions, exposure to tantrums and noise.
  • This job requires the ability to lift/move 29 lbs.
  • This job requires reaching, bending, and stooping frequently, working in a standing position for long periods of time.
  • Flexibility in scheduling is required.

Normal hours of work: Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and includes a ½ hour unpaid meal break. Some flexibility in scheduling is required. The hours of work and work schedule will be set by the supervisor as per operational requirements.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

  • Submit as required a Police Record Check (vulnerable sector check) that is acceptable to The Salvation Army in its sole discretion.
  • This position is funded in part through the Canada Summer Jobs Program and the following represents the applicant

criteria:

    • aged 15 to 30 years at the beginning of the employment period;
    • be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has
    • been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment*; and,
    • holds a valid Social Insurance Number; and,
    • be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations.
  • *International students are not eligible participants. International students include anyone who is temporarily in Canada for studies and who is not a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person who has been granted refugee status in Canada.
  • An ongoing condition of employment is the ability to maintain immigration status to legally remain and work in Canada which is supported by valid immigration documents.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Completed a minimum of grade eleven (11).
  • A current valid Standard First Aid and CPR certificate, or willingness to obtain would be an asset.

EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE:

  • Minimum of one (1) year prior experience in a day camp setting working with children.
  • Must have excellent written, verbal and computer skills (this includes but not limited to video editing)
  • Have own computer with reliable internet connection, as file access and meetings may take place online.

  • Must comply with all Salvation Army policies, procedures, and associated legislation.

  • Undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion (i.e., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry etc.).
  • Ability and willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.
