Qualifications and Skills

The Indigenous Summer Student program provides students with work placement experience, combined with cultural teaching/learning. The Indigenous Health Summer Student Program enables students to learn through many different methods, one of which is hands on experience working in the health care field as an opportunity to learn about careers and work in the health care sector.

When you apply for this selection process, you are not applying for any specific position, but to an inventory in anticipation of future vacancies within any one of the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority sites. Applicants who meet the essential qualifications will have their application included in the inventory for this ongoing selection process. Richness of learning opportunities and compatibility with selected student skill sets are considered.

Applicants will be contacted for an initial screening process. As positions become available, the applicants meeting the initial screening requirements may be contacted and referred to a WRHA site for consideration.

DUTIES
The incumbent in this function may have the opportunity to assist with several duties that include but are not limited to: researching material, preparing, and organizing program workshop information relevant to specific projects, participate in special projects, filing, and office maintenance, prepare routine correspondence, filing, copying, various computer work and various other duties related to social and health sciences.


QUALIFICATIONS

  • Current enrollment in high school, university or college and returning in the fall
  • Enrolled in or pursuing a degree in Social Sciences or Health Sciences
  • Proficiency with computerized systems (Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Internet search engines, and email)
  • Understanding of the Indigenous community and culture preferred
  • Strong communications skills verbally and in writing
  • Ability to prioritize workload, independently complete a variety of tasks, and meet deadlines
  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work within a team environment, including internal/external committee members, staff and colleagues
  • Experience with literature searches
  • Experience in the successful preparation of research papers and reports i.e. summary of an article (post-secondary student)
  • Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality
  • Preferred incumbent will have knowledge of compiling info into a database

This term position may end earlier as outlined in your collective agreement.

This position requires a current satisfactory Criminal Records Check (including Vulnerable Sector Search), Child Abuse Registry Check and Adult Abuse Registry Check as conditions of employment. The successful candidate will be responsible for any service charges incurred. A security check is considered current if it was obtained no more than six (6) months prior to the start of employment.

Please note that an employee is not permitted to hold two or more positions across the WRHA legal entity that combine to equal more than 1.0 EFT. The WRHA legal entity includes Churchill Health Centre, Deer Lodge Centre, Golden West Centennial Lodge, Grace Hospital, Middlechurch Home of Winnipeg, Pan Am Clinic, River Park Gardens, Victoria General Hospital, WRHA corporate programs, and WRHA community health services.
