Seasonal Deckhand ? Sail Halifax (Summer 2026)

Job Summary

Sail Halifax is seeking a reliable, outgoing, and safety-focused seasonal Deckhand to join our crew for the 2026 summer sailing season aboard our 41-foot sailing yacht operating in Halifax Harbour and surrounding coastal waters.

This is a hands-on role ideal for someone with previous sailing experience who enjoys working outdoors, interacting with guests, and being part of a small professional crew. The Deckhand will assist with vessel operations, docking, passenger safety, cleaning, trip preparation, and overall guest experience during private sailing charters.

The ideal candidate is confident around boats, comfortable handling lines and fenders, physically capable, personable with guests, and able to remain calm and professional in changing marine conditions.

Responsibilities

• Assist captain with docking, undocking, mooring, and general vessel operations
• Handle lines, fenders, sail preparation, and deck organization
• Welcome guests aboard and assist with passenger safety briefings
• Help maintain a clean, organized, and professional vessel appearance before and after charters
• Assist with fueling, stocking supplies, cleaning, and light vessel maintenance
• Monitor guest comfort and provide excellent customer service throughout charters
• Support onboard safety procedures and emergency readiness
• Assist with setup and takedown for daily charter operations
• Help monitor weather and marine conditions when required

Requirements

• Previous sailing or boating experience is required
• Comfortable working on the water and in varying weather conditions
• Strong communication and customer service skills
• Ability to lift equipment, handle lines, and remain on your feet for extended periods
• Positive attitude and ability to work closely as part of a small team
• Punctual, dependable, and professional
• Marine certifications such as SVOP, MED, ROC-M, or First Aid are considered strong assets
• Experience with sailboats is preferred
• Must be at least 18 years old

Position Details

• Seasonal position, approximately June through October
• Flexible scheduling including evenings and weekends
• Based in Halifax, Nova Scotia
• Opportunity for additional hours during peak tourism periods
