Our rotational Summer Internship Program offers a unique opportunity for highly driven and motivated accounting students in their third year of university studies (2024 graduates). Our program is designed to provide broad experience in a traditional department before rotating to a specialty department, to ensure that candidates are exposed to the versatility of a CPA designation and where it can take them.

From May 2023 – August 2023, candidates will rotate over a 4-month period through Audit & Accounting and Business Valuations.

While traditional services lines such as Audit and Assurance is well-known, here is a quick look at the Business Valuations specialty department involved in the summer internship program:

Business Valuations:

Our Business Valuations department is a busy and robust practice. The majority of the time is spent on the preparation of various reports used in court proceedings, for tax planning purposes, or in buy/sell transactions. The types of reports we prepare include:

  • Valuation of companies (as a whole, or minority interests)
  • Quantification of financial losses
  • Forensic accounting investigations
  • Calculation of an individual’s income for matrimonial purposes
  • Critiquing another expert’s report

Through this internship, you will learn how to apply technical concepts to client situations, gain practical experience towards your CPA designation and communicate with staff across all levels of the Firm while enjoying the benefits of our summer hours and working in smaller teams. We are also equipped to work remotely should public health measures require us to do so.

Major Responsibilities:

Within each department, Summer Interns will have the following responsibilities:

1. Audit & Accounting:

  • Review planning documents and participate in planning meetings
  • In conjunction with the engagement senior, devise appropriate engagement program, including risk analysis, the calculation of materiality and appropriate procedures
  • Obtain/maintain a strong understanding of clients’ businesses and be proactive to anticipate client needs
  • Prepare financial statements, including note disclosure as required
  • Recognize accounting issues and work with senior to devise appropriate work plan to address them
  • Maintain knowledge of Canadian accounting standards and updates
  • Prepare corporate tax returns and gain an appropriate level of tax knowledge
  • Customize client correspondence where appropriate, including management representation letter, legal letters etc.

2. Business Valuations:

  • Assist in financial analysis and modeling
  • Assist in the writing of various reports
  • Conduct market and industry research for reports
  • Prepare information requests for production of documents
  • Manage and organizing production of documents
  • Document analysis (including financial and legal documents)
  • Communicate with clients and/or lawyers
  • Work with managers and partners directly
  • Assist with mediation/trial preparation
  • Learn more about the Chartered Business Valuator (CBV) designation

    Candidate Profile:

    • Completion of third year universities studies in the accounting stream prior to internship start date
    • Intention to pursue a CPA designation
    • Energetic, highly motivated with a desire to learn
    • Well-developed organizational skills and with a high level of attention to detail
    • Good time management, analytical and problem-solving abilities
    • Excellent oral and written communication skills
    • Working knowledge of MS Excel, MS Word and MS Outlook is an asset
    • Preference will be given to Rotman students, however all are welcome to apply
