SAIT Trojans Recreation Children’s Programs’ mission is to deliver unique, engaging, educational and skill building experiences to children aged 7-13 in a safe and fun environment. Our camps help campers explore their interests and further their passion. Positive, energetic and engaged camp leaders with a high degree of professionalism are the key to ensuring that this valuable experience happens!

SAIT Trojans Recreation Children’s Programs is looking for passionate individuals with an interest, knowledge and/or experience in physical literacy and sports. All camps take an inquiry based, hands-on, approach to learning. This fast-paced, deadline-driven position requires exceptional people, organization, time management, and communication skills. This position is essential to ensuring the camp experience runs smoothly and is enjoyable for campers, camp leaders, parents, and staff.

**Must be able to skate well and have a good understanding and knowledge of the game of hockey.**

Position Details:
Start Date: August 6, 2019 (with a possibility of an earlier start date)
End Date: August 30, 2019
Hours: Up to 40 hours per week; Monday to Friday (except on stat holidays). This position may entail some overtime (evenings). There are a variety of shifts that the Admin Team will cover when the camp season is underway. You must be available to work anytime between 7:30am – 5:30pm, Monday to Friday.


Job Description

Delivering Lessons & Daily Duties:
  • Lead and modify camp lessons and activities to SAIT Trojans Recreation Children’s Programs standards
  • Make accommodations for campers with varying learning needs
  • Supervise campers during lunch time
  • Participate in recreation activities with campers
  • Gather and integrate feedback from campers into your leadership/teaching practice
  • Keep accurate records of supply usage and inventory

Leading Children/Youth:
  • Ensure the safety, well-being and enjoyment of campers from ages 7-14
  • Mediate conflict with integrity and consistency
  • Provide a safe, healthy environment for campers to thrive
  • Be a role model for children and youth

Emergency Response:
  • React and adapt quickly to emergency situations involving children and youth
  • Display a strong ability to manage stressful situations calmly and effectively
  • Consistently follow SAIT Trojans Recreation Children’s Programs and SAIT Summer Camps policies and procedures with children, youth, families, staff and the public

Communications & Reporting:
  • Communicate with parents/guardians about their child’s experience at camp
  • Address parent/guardian concerns as required
  • Document incidents according to SAIT policy

Qualifications

General & Technical:
  • 18 years of age or older
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and verbal and written communication skills
  • Self-motivated and driven
  • Fast learner in a fast-paced environment
  • Willingness to work a varying shift schedule beginning as early as 7:30am and ending as late as 5:30pm
  • Valid CPR/First Aid qualification *
  • Valid Police Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Search (within 6 months) *

*Successful applicants will be required to provide a clean and current criminal record check with vulnerable sector search prior to the first day of employment. Successful applicants will also be required to undergo CPR/First Aid training, at the applicant’s expense, prior to the first day of their employment if they do not already possess a valid certification.

  • Can build rapport with staff to maintain a trusting and cohesive work environment
  • Discreet and tactful with sensitive information and situations
  • Develops trust and relationships quickly with campers
  • Solid work ethic and high degree of professionalism

Camp-Specific Skills/Knowledge:
  • Responsible for sign in and sign out of children
  • Lead children and youth through a variety of activities throughout the day, including sports, bowling, and swimming
